Protect-Tricks

A burglary occurs every three minutes in Canada! What can you do to avoid this? The answer is simple— an alarm system makes you one-third less likely to fall victim to a burglary. That’s why more and more homeowners are turning to the solutions offered by the security system leader—Protectron.

However, security is more than just a matter of equipment—it depends on a whole set of related measures. We recommend that you put the following tips into practice to plan what you would do in the case of a problem, and make sure every member of your family develop good security habits at home and in your neighborhood.

The advantage of developing habits is so you don’t have to think about them—once they’re habits, they come automatically without you having to make any special effort.

You can protect your property more effectively by following these tips:

  • Join your neighborhood watch program. Some communities have neighborhood watch programs that bring together a group of people to watch for thieves and work together for community security.
  • Keep shrubs and trees around your home well trimmed. Don’t leave areas for burglars to hide in. Your neighbors should be able to see the front and back of your home.
  • Protect your storage sheds and outbuildings. Opportunity helps the thief. The simple presence of certain objects around your home could encourage people to use them to break windows and doors.
  • Use light to discourage thieves. Inside and outdoor, lights are particularly useful when connected to an automatic timer or motion detectors monitoring the inside of your home.
  • During extended absences, try to give the impression that the house is occupied. Have someone pick up your mail, always lock the garage door, etc. You could also give a key to someone you trust to check up on the house.

Don’t give criminals any opportunity. Do everything you can to dissuade them by suitably equipping your home and including security measures in your home improvement plans. Learn about our Life Safety™ Program.
